Overview
Our client, had made significant investments in energy efficiency and delta-t enhancement to their award winning 80-storey skyscraper in Dubau, housing both residential and commercial spaces. While their investment in arkEMIS—our robust Energy Management Information System—provided a solid foundation for data collection, they struggled to translate that data into clear insights for executives and actionable intelligence for operations.
Challenge
Despite having access to detailed utility, emissions, and equipment-level data through arkEMIS, the client faced two key issues:
Lack of executive visibility
C-suite leaders needed high-level performance insights, but navigating a complex platform wasn't feasible. They wanted quick, visual summaries they could trust—without logging into yet another system
Limited operational feedback
Sensor and meter failures or data anomalies often went unnoticed. Without a real-time diagnostic layer, the operations team lacked the tools to respond to connectivity issues or performance deviations promptly
The client needed a solution that would connect strategic reporting with real-time operational oversight—and do it automatically.
Solution
To address these challenges, we developed a custom, API-driven reporting system by integrating arkEMIS with Microsoft Power BI. This solution pulled real-time data directly from arkEMIS and transformed it into tailored dashboards and reports for two distinct audiences:
For Executives:
- Automated dashboards highlighting energy and delta t savings, Scope 2 emissions, and utility cost trends
- Custom visualizations to support boardroom presentations and carbon reporting
- No system login required—reports are auto-refreshed and accessible via shared links
For Operations:
- Real-time logging of sensor and meter connectivity issues
- Active alert tracking and technical diagnostics for on-site anomalies
- Equipment-level consumption insights, Delta T tracking, and detailed M&V reports aligned to IPMVP standards
Key Features Included:
- Energy efficiency project tracking with verified savings
- Automated year-on-year comparisons of utility usage and costs
- Scope 2 emissions monitoring using both location- and market-based methods
- Dynamic customization based on each asset’s metering and data availability
The entire solution was built to be fully automated and scalable—reducing manual reporting tasks and improving data reliability across the organization.
Conclusion
By leveraging the arkEMIS API to power custom Power BI reports, the client successfully streamlined energy and carbon reporting across strategic and operational levels. The results included:
- 80%+ reduction in time spent on internal reporting
- Improved operational responsiveness to sensor/meter issues
- Greater executive engagement
- Simplified Scope 2 emissions tracking for ESG reporting
This case demonstrates how the right integration can transform a powerful EMIS into a user-friendly, insight-driven reporting system—without adding complexity or requiring new workflows.
